âš“ Rules for Navigating Private Vessels

The U.S. Coast Guard enforces temporary regulations throughout Boston Harbor to manage the heavy vessel traffic: âš“

  • Designated Spectator Zones: The Coast Guard has mapped out 13 temporary Spectator Areas near the Boston North Channel, President Roads, Long Island, Deer Island, and the Inner Harbor. You can view the layout on the Sail Boston Spectator Anchorages Map.
  • Strict Arrival Window: Anchorages open at 6:00 AM on July 11 and close at 4:00 PM.
  • No Overnight Stay: Overnight anchoring is strictly prohibited in these temporary zones.
  • Vessel Size Zoning: Closer Inner Harbor spaces (Areas 1 & 2) are restricted to boats under 45 feet long with superstructures under 10 feet high. Late-arriving recreational vessels are directed to outer zones such as Areas 11 and 12.
  • Strict Security Buffers: Boaters must maintain a mandatory 100-yard safety zone around all moving tall ships, a 25-yard buffer from moored ships, and a 500-yard buffer around foreign naval vessels.
  • One-Way Traffic Flow: Once the parade begins, a mandatory counterclockwise traffic pattern is strictly enforced around the Inner Harbor by the Coast Guard Patrol Commander. Moving between anchorages is prohibited unless authorized.
  • No Discharge Area: Boston Harbor is a strict clean-water zone; you must hail our pump-out boat on VHF Channel 69
